Spelman Does Broadway - Jaja's African Hair Braiding

This dazzling world premiere welcomes you into Jaja’s bustling hair braiding shop in Harlem where every day, a lively and eclectic group of West African immigrant hair braiders are creating masterpieces on the heads of neighborhood women. During one sweltering summer day, love will blossom, dreams will flourish and secrets will be revealed. The uncertainty of their circumstances simmers below the surface of their lives and when it boils over, it forces this tight-knit community to confront what it means to be an outsider on the edge of the place they call home.

Our Fall 2023, Spelman Does Broadway event will check out Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, starring Spelman alumna, Lakisha May. Stick around after the show as we join the cast for a post-performance talkback.

To purchase tickets, please complete our Sign-up Form which includes payment details. See you at the show!

NY-NAASC Night at Watch Night

NY-NAASC Night at Watch Night

Not so long ago and in a place not so far away, an AME church and a synagogue stand next to each other. Both are targets of deadly hate crimes only days apart. An opportunistic reporter is there to break the news with a sensational story of American racism and rage. Beyond the headlines, the congregants are left to process the violence that has shattered the places where they pray, and to ask themselves, how do we choose faith in the face of hatred? What is the value of justice and is there peace in forgiveness?

Join the NY-NAASC as we check out the PAC NYC World Premiere from the acclaimed artistic team of Tony Award-winning choreographer / dancer / director / writer Bill T. Jones (Fela!, Spring Awakening), poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph (Morehouse Alum) (We Shall Not Be Moved), composer Tamar-kali (Mudbound) and dramaturg Lauren Whitehead (Between the World and Me: Onstage at the Apollo). Watch Night fuses melodies rooted in Spirituals, percussive breath and fiery opera with the urgency of slam poetry and Bill T. Jones’ dynamic staging to create a sonically explosive round of American hope that refuses to forget while striving to forgive.

Use the discount code "MOSPELNIGHT" for a special discount of 18.67%. Tickets can be purchased on at PACNYC.org or at (212) 266-3000. Hope to see you at the show!

Spelman Does Broadway

Join the NAASC Chapters of New York, Westchester, and New Jersey for a night on Broadway! We’ll enjoy Blues for an Alabama Sky and a talkback with our very own sister Pearl Cleage, C’71.

Blues for An Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, Directed by LA Williams

It’s the summer of 1930 and the promises of the Harlem Renaissance are giving way to the dashed dreams of the Great Depression. Playwright Pearl Cleage (Flyin’ West and Oprah Book Club selection What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day) tells a strikingly modern story about four friends whose lives and passions collide when an innocent newcomer from Alabama arrives in New York.
